Knowing your pet needs surgery can be a stressful for you and your pet. Our surgical staff at West Toledo Animal Hospital can put you at ease by providing the best care for your pet before, during and after their surgery.
We perform a variety of surgeries to get your pet back to a healthy and happy place. These include:
Surgery can prevent further, more serious health issues from happening later. A pet that is sick and uncomfortable will return to their happy and healthy state after surgery. If you notice negative behaviors from your pet, these can become less or diminish entirely after surgery.
Every surgery is different, but there are certain things to expect before, during and after pet surgery. Do not feed your pet before a surgery, unless you are specifically told to do so. If your pet is taking any medications, let us know prior to surgery, since you may need to stop giving your pet meds right before a surgery.
Once our surgeon completes your pet's surgery, they will be monitored by our staff to make sure they are safely recovering. Your pet may be able to go home with you on the same day, based on what type of procedure was performed. Once your pet is home, make sure they continue to get plenty of rest. Physical movement should be limited at this time so that your animal's incisions from surgery heal properly. Medications post-surgery can be given at this time to reduce infection. We may also suggest you change your pet's diet for a time until they completely recover from surgery.
We will administer anesthesia to your pet during surgery. This is to keep them and our staff safe while surgery is being performed. With your pet under anesthesia, our surgeons can perform to the best of their ability, which helps give your pet the best outcome possible.
An anesthesiologist will be monitoring your animal while they are under to make sure they are safe. Most anesthesia is given intravenously. Your pet's vitals will be monitored before, during, and after surgery to make sure they are safe and comfortable.
Make an appointment and be sure to bring any medications with you, as well as your pet's complete health and medical history so that we can give a correct diagnosis. We will perform a physical on your pet to make sure they are well enough for surgery. X-rays may also be done.
Once a diagnosis is made, we can then recommend and schedule your animal's surgery. We will give you as many details as possible to make sure you are comfortable and to know that your pet is in safe hands. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or need more information about your pet's upcoming surgery. We are here to help and make sure beloved pet gets the best treatment possible.
